Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) 2006

We now offer to recycle your old faulty item under the new WEEE directive for any new item that you buy from our online or local shop. All you have to do is send us or drop off the old item when you purchase a product from us. This will make possible your item is recycled in the most proficient manner.

These regulations brought into UK law part of the provisions of the EU WEEE Directive which was introduced to encourage the reuse, recycling and recovery of end-of-life electronic and electrical equipment.

Scope of the WEEE Regulations

WEEE is defined in the regulations as:

"electrical and electronic equipment" means equipment which is dependent on electric currents or electromagnetic fields in order to work properly and equipment for the generation, transfer and measurement of such currents and fields falling under the categories set out in Schedule 1 to the Regulations and designed for use with a voltage rating not exceeding 1,000 volts for alternating current and 1,500 volts for direct current;

The Categories set out in Schedule 1 of the Regulations are:
  • Large household appliances
  • Small household appliances
  • IT and telecommunications equipment
  • Consumer equipment
  • Lighting equipment (with the exception of household luminaries and filament light bulbs)
  • Electrical and electronic tools (with the exception of large-scale stationary industrial tools)
  • Toys, leisure and sports equipment
  • Medical devices (with the exception of all implanted and infected products)
  • Monitoring and control instruments
  • Automatic Dispensers
The waste Electrical or electronic equipment (WEEE) directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items. In the UK, distributors (including retailers) must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. Those establishing their own take-back scheme must as a minimum offer all customers buying new electrical equipment free take back of their old electrical on a like for like basis.

Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in the landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination.- harming wildlife and also human health.

To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with a crossed- out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with a crossed out wheeled bin symbol) in your bin.
